15 Best Free Remote Access Software Tools

Remote desktop software, also known as remote access software or remote control software, allows you to control one computer from another. We mean remote control—you can take over the mouse and keyboard and use the computer you’ve connected to as if it were your own.
In most cases, remotely accessing a computer necessitates the installation of software on the computer to which you wish to connect, known as the host. Another computer or device with the necessary credentials, known as the client, connects to and controls the host.

The better free remote access programs listed below are simple to use and require no special computer knowledge to get started.

01DWService

DWService is a free and open-source project that makes remote access a breeze. The programme is installed or temporarily run by the host, and the client logs in using any web browser to run commands, control the screen, or access files and folders.

Host Side

The host has two options: download the DWAgent and run it for one-time, on-demand access (ideal for tech support) or install it for permanent remote access (ideal if it’s your own computer).

If you select the run option rather than the install option, you will be given a user code and password that the client will need to access the computer. Otherwise, enter the code and password provided by the client in order for them to have constant access to the host computer.

Client Side

If the host uses the on-demand option, the client has it easy. Log in using the link below and enter the code and password displayed in the DWAgent programme window on the host’s computer. That’s all!

If the programme was installed by the host, the setup procedure is slightly more involved. Create a free user account by clicking the link below, and then add a new agent to your account. During the programme installation, provide the code to the host.

DWService includes a number of tools. You don’t have to open the screen sharing tool to send/receive files or run commands, unlike some remote access programmes.

As the client, you have access to the following tools: Files and Folders, Text editor, Log watch, Resources, Screen, and Shell. They allow you to create various text-based files, browse the file system to create, edit, or delete files, and upload or download files to and from the host; run Command Prompt commands, view basic system information, shut down tasks, and start or stop services.

The DWAgent host tool can be installed on a variety of operating systems, including Windows, Linux, and macOS. It is also accessible via a mobile web browser.

02Chrome Remote Desktop

Chrome Remote Desktop is a Chrome browser extension that allows you to configure a computer for remote access.

Host Side

The way this works is that you install the extension to either get a random code that you can share with someone else for spontaneous support (get that code here) or a PIN that you can use to log into the computer from your own Google account at any time.

Client Side

Sign in to Chrome Remote Desktop through another web browser using the same Google credentials or a temporary access code generated by the host computer to connect to the host browser.

Because you’re logged in, you can easily see the other PC’s name and select it to begin the remote session.

There is no chat function, as with similar programmes, but it is very simple to set up and allows you to connect to your computer (or anyone else’s) from anywhere using only your web browser.

Furthermore, you can remote into the computer even if the user does not have Chrome open or is completely logged out of their user account.

Because it is entirely contained within Chrome, it can

03Getscreen. me

Getscreen.me, a free remote access servi ce, is a simple tool with some great features. This is what you want if you need to get into someone’s computer quickly without messing around with logins or installations.

File sharing, an integrated chat window, buttons for common keyboard shortcuts (e.g., switch users, open Run box, open File Explorer), a system information viewer, full-screen mode, audio calling, and clipboard sharing are all available.

Host Side

The software must be downloaded and opened on the computer to which it will be connected. Installation is not required, but it can be done if this computer will need to be accessed remotely on a regular basis.

There are two methods for connecting the client. One option is to log in to the client’s user account using their email and password, which is a good option if they’ll be using this computer frequently.

Another method for using Getscreen.me is to open the pr ogramme

share the public link. Anyone who receives the link to this anonymous session will have access to your computer without the need for a password. This is ideal for on-the-fly technical support, but keep in mind that the connection time is limited when the programme is used anonymously in this manner.

The host can specify whether the client is allowed to control the mouse/keyboard, capture sound, and make audio calls.

Client Side

There are two ways to connect to the remote computer. You have permanent access if you logged in to your account in the host programme, which means you can visit the link below to log in to the same account in a web browser to access the other computer.

Another possibility is that the host did not log in to the account. The host can provide a URL that you can open from your device to gain access to the remote PC without having to enter your account information.

Free users face a few restrictions that can only be removed if you pay. For example, only two computers can be linked to your account at the same time, you cannot record the connection, and Wake-on-LAN is not supported.

04Windows Remote Desktop

The remote access software built into the Windows operating system is known as Windows Remote Desktop. To use the programme, no additional downloads are required.

Host Side

To connect to a computer using Windows Remote Desktop, open the System Properties settings via Settings (W11) or Control Panel and allow remote connections through a specific Windows user.

You must configure your router for port forwarding so that another PC can connect to it from outside the network, but this is usually not a difficult task.

Client Side

The other computer that wishes to connect to the host machine must simply launch the Remote Desktop Connection software and enter the host’s IP address.

05UltraVNC

UltraVNC works similarly to Remote Utilities in that a server and viewer are installed on two PCs, with the viewer controlling the server.

Host Side

During installation, you are asked whether you want to install the Server, the Viewer, or both. Install the Server on the PC to which you want to connect.

Server can be installed as a system service and run continuously. This is the best option because you can always connect to it using the client software.

Client Side

To connect to the Server, you must install the Viewer component during setup.

After configuring port forwarding in your router, you’ll be able to connect to the host computer from any location with an internet connection—via a mobile device that supports VNC connections, a PC with the Viewer installed, or an internet browser. To connect, all you need is the IP address of the server.

UltraVNC supports file transfers, text chat, clipboard sharing, and can even boot into Safe Mode and connect to the server.

06Distant Desktop

This is yet another portable remote access programme. It’s also completely free for both personal and commercial use, which is unusual.

Host Side

The client-controlled computer only needs to share its ID and password with the other computer.

Client Side

Connect to the computer that will be performing the remote access and enter the host’s ID and password. The program’s tabs at the top allow you to open multiple connections at once.

Once connected to the other computer, you can send and receive files as well as communicate via text or voice. Passwords are generated automatically, but you can customise them to make them easier to remember.

Windows 11, 10, 8, Vista, and 7, as well as Windows Server 2008, 2003, and 2000, are all supported. There is also an Android app that can serve as both the host and the client.

A07nyDesk

AnyDesk is a remote desktop application that can be run portable or installed as a regular programme.

Host Side

L aunch it on the PC to which you want to connect and note the 9-digit number or custom alias, if one is configured.

When the client connects, the host is prompted to allow or deny the connection, as well as control permissions such as allowing sound, clipboard use, and the ability to block the host’s keyboard/mousea control.

Client Side

Run AnyDesk on another computer, then enter the host’s Remote Desk ID or alias in the program’s Remote Address section, and wait for the host to accept the connection. AnyDesk’s web client can also be used to connect to the host.

The client does not have to wait for the host to accept the connection if unattended access is enabled.

The programme autom atically updates and can enter full-screen mode, balance connection quality and speed, transfer files and sound, sync the clipboard, record the remote session, run keyboard shortcuts, take screenshots of the remote computer, and restart the host computer.

It is compatible with macOS, Linux, and Windows 11, 10, 8, 7, and XP. There is also an app for iOS, Android, and Windows.

08AeroAdmin

AeroAdmin is most likely the most user-friendly programme for free remote access. There are few settings, and everything is quick and to the point, which is ideal for on-the-fly assistance.

Host Side

Simply launch the portable application and share your IP address or the assigned ID with someone else. This is how the client computer will connect to the host.

Client Side

The client PC only needs to run the same programme and enter the ID or IP address. Before connecting, you can select View Only or Remote Control, and then simply select Connect to request remote control.

You can begin controlling the computer and sharing clipboard text once the host computer confirms the connection.

It’s great that AeroAdmin is free for both personal and commercial use, but it’s a shame there isn’t a chat option and even worse that you can’t transfer files.

Another thing to keep in mind is that, while the programme is completely free, it does have a monthly usage limit.

09Iperius Remote

Iperius Remote is one of the most user-friendly remote desktop programmes, with features such as a powerful file transfer tool and a chat application. With their mobile app, you can also connect to a computer remotely.

Host Side

Open the programme and check the box that says Allow connections to see your password. Share that with the client, along with the ID next to it, so they can connect to the computer.

Client Side

Enter the host computer’s ID into the second text box, click Connect, and then enter the password when prompted.

This free remote access software is ideal for on-demand access. You and the other person can download and use Iperius Remote in a matter of minutes.

The programme interface is extremely simple and straightforward. You can send the Ctrl+Alt+Del shortcut, select which display to view, switch to full screen mode, and open the file transfer or chat utility while connected remotely.

If you want more control, you can go into the settings and enable things like continuous access, a custom password, a proxy, and so on.

10AnyViewer

Iperius Remote is one of the most user-friendly remote desktop programmes, with features such as a powerful file transfer tool and a chat application. With their mobile app, you can also connect to a computer remotely.

Host Side

Give the client the device ID and security code. The programme generates the security code, which is set to change every time the software is restarted. By editing the program’s settings, you can make it change more or less frequently—you can even set the code yourself if you want the client to be able to access the computer in the future with the same code.

Client Side

In the Start Control box, enter the device ID for the host, and then press Connect. On the prompt that appears, choose either sending a control request to the host and then waiting for them to accept it, or entering the security code.

During a session, the client can adjust the resolution to better fit the display and switch between high and low image quality to prioritize one over the other.

During a remote session, the Operation tab includes shortcuts to common actions such as Ctrl+Alt+Del, lock, log out, restart, shut down, This PC, Task Manager, and Command Prompt. You can also set the device to automatically lock when the session ends, and if you pay, you can disable the host’s mouse/keyboard and make the recipient’s screen black.

If you want to manage unattended devices and view the connection history, you can create a user account. Otherwise, you can connect to the host immediately after installation, making it ideal for both one-time and repeat users.
